THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO VOLUNTEERED TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN!


Year of the Tiger  Lunar New Year Celebration Feb 16-19 Tues - Fri 2010


Purpose: educate about the symbolism and traditions of lunar new year (celebrating the arrival of spring, new beginnings and renewal), share culture and celebrate together


Lunchtime Activities

  • TUES: creating flowering spring branches with paint and tissue paper and/or name stamps (chops) out of styrofoam (need someone to head this booth-- otherwise we will not have an activity on this day)

  • WED: Chinese calligraphy-- kids learn to write a Chinese character using traditional brush and ink on red paper. Take home and put on door for good luck.  (Yan Chen, Bibiana, Ming, and Li Yun)

  • THURS: information about Chinese zodiac signs so kids can find out what animal they are and what it means, take a little card of info home (Weldon/Xiaomei and Bibiana)

  • FRI: making paper lanterns (Nikki Pham-Chandra),  ribbon sticks (Diana Lee Rm22 and Rm2), and maraca/tamborines (Sue Correll Rm 26) for parade

Ask students to bring in a spring flowering branch such as plum, apple, apricot, cherry, quince, etc. put them in vases in the office and classrooms as heralds of spring. WED 2/17


OHLONE ARROW: Article about the traditions and meaning of LNY (Deb Whitman)


LIBRARY DISPLAY CASE:  Jade Chao to put lunar new year objects in glass case in library with informational placards


RED ENVELOPES: Jade Chao is getting 520 envelopes (thanks Bibiana!) and will make sure to stuff them with gold coins by 2/16.  Distribute to teachers on 2/16 Tuesday.


BOOK ORDERS: Preorder autographed books by Oliver Chin. Julie librarian to xerox flyers and distribute to teachers to give to kids. Grace Mah to send flyer email to Arrow for attachment and reminder to submit orders by due date. Grace will collect money and submit to Oliver Chin by agreed upon date. Grace will get books from Oliver on 2/17 and fulfill orders.


DECORATIONS: Leena Leung in charge of decorating MP room and office. She will get lanterns from storage shed, bring supplies for hanging, post artwork on bulletin boards, hang lanterns and dragon from ceiling. Decorations to go up Tues 2/16 and will come down Fri 2/19 after parade.  Jason and Lucy Lee to make fake firecracker strings by 2/16


PHOTOGRAPHERS: Chris Eggleston and maybe Brian Roos will photograph events and post to flickr.


PRESS RELEASE: Grace Mah to contact PA weekly & Chinese newspapers to let them know about our events so they can send photographer/writer to cover story if they choose to.


SCHOOL SIGNBOARD: Helen Hsiu to post on school signboard HAPPY YEAR OF THE TIGER! 

FRI 2/19 2pm LUNAR NEW YEAR DRAGON PARADE


All-school assembly with cultural performances

  • Two 45 min assemblies, half the school attends each one

    • Wed 17th 8:30am-9:15am, 9:15am-10am

  • Traditional music, martial arts demo, and graphic artist author, Oliver Chin, will do a reading of his "Year of the Tiger" book, MI students will sing a song

  • David Yen will meet with Melanie Chang Rm 16 to find out how to set up AV equipment for assembly, including laptop, projector, screen, microphone. He will set up Wed by 8:15am in MP room and make sure equipment is  returned after assembly at 10am.


Dragon dance parade:  All-school event FRI 2/19 on blacktop. 2pm.


DRAGON:  by Jan 25 we will distribute a piece of cloth to each classroom, about 3ft square, for each class to decorate (may enlist art teachers to do this). Return your section of fabric to me by due date (Feb 5) so we can sew them together to create a long body for the dragon and students can participate in parade around the schoolyard.

  • Nerissa - working on head.

  • Brian Koss - working on sticks and affixing snaps by 1/25

  • Deb Whitman-- bought material, art supplies, will complete instructions for teachers and distribute fabric to classes by 1/25

  • Grace Mah-- will cut fabric by 1/21

  • Nico Janik-- will sew finished pieces together between 2/5 and 2/10

  • Nerissa-- will run mandatory afterschool practice (thurs 2/18 2:45-3:15pm) so kids learn how to carry the dragon.  Get permission slips to teachers.  will work with Gil to setup for parade, will provide music.


PTA hospitality??? will provide hot tea and almond cookies or fortune cookies???

  2. PERSON TO TAKE CHARGE OF TUES NOON ART BOOTH
