From its humble beginnings to its flourishing present, the farm has been a cornerstone of experiential learning at Ohlone, offering students a hands-on journey through farming, science, history, and social studies.
In this short documentary, viewers are invited to delve into the rich history and vibrant activities that characterize this unique educational space. Led by dedicated educators, passionate parents, and enthusiastic students, the farm is a dynamic hub of exploration and discovery.
Christine Baker, the Farm Manager, warmly welcomes viewers into the Ohlone School farm. "Every class in the school comes here once a week. And they learn all about farming and science and history and social studies."
Baker's words encapsulate the essence of the farm—a place where learning transcends traditional boundaries, where students engage with nature firsthand, and where curiosity is nurtured at every turn. From lessons on insects and cover crops to explorations of pollinators and weeds, the farm serves as a living classroom, offering a holistic education that extends far beyond textbooks.
Tanya Buxton, a former Farm Teacher, and Bill Overton, farm founder and former Ohlone teacher and principal, share their perspectives on the farm's impact. Buxton reflects on the origins of the farm's initiatives, recalling how a simple idea sparked a cascade of learning opportunities. "A parent had an idea about starting beehives here," she recalls. "And so I took that and ran with it."
Meanwhile, Overton reminisces about the farm's evolution, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and hands-on learning. "We had real-life science equipment, you know, in our backyard," he shares, underscoring the farm's role as a living laboratory for exploration and discovery.
The farm's impact extends beyond the classroom, fostering a sense of community and stewardship among students, parents, and volunteers. Baker emphasizes the importance of collective effort, noting, "Every hand counts." Whether composting, weeding, or tending to animals, individuals of all ages come together to support the farm's mission.
As we reflect on the farm's journey and the profound impact it has had on countless lives, we are reminded of the importance of community involvement. Parents, guardians, and volunteers play a crucial role in supporting the farm's mission and ensuring its continued success.

So incredible to see how the farm has grown! I still vividly remember remember No Man's Land and planting apple trees in honor of the Challenger astronauts... Not to mention countless hours spent spreading mulch and collecting eggs. It is truly so amazing to see how the farm has evolved.
